Newbies no more

Updated: Nov 7, 2022

After living in NY and London, which have the world’s best museums, you become a bit of a snob. I had never considered museums to be a big attraction in HK, but when Science museum opened up a special dinosaur exhibit 'The Big Eight', I knew I had to take my dinosaur, I have recently watched all the Jurassic Park movies, obsessed girl (L). Ok let's be real - more like I realized said exhibit is only open until November and this mummy better get her act together. Thankfully, the stars aligned and I managed to score tickets during half term week - one for team mummy! As an added bonus, Daddy was able to take the day off and join us!

I'm so glad this task did not land up in my 'to do' list that never gets done. The exhibit was fantastic and L loved it. Even V, who still loves cars more than dinosaurs, started naming all the ones on display. As soon as you walk in, you see a giant reconstructed dinosaur skeleton, and as the name of the exhibit indicates, there are 8 of the most iconic dinosaurs of the period. I'm sad to admit L, who has read up and watched a lot of shows around dinosaurs knew more about these fascinating creatures than me (I expect the start of a period where she realizes mummy does not know everything). The exhibit isn't that large and we went through it fairly quickly. We then had a little time to visit some of the other floors of the museum which were great and surprisingly very kid friendly and interactive. Our favorite was the mirror area where they had various mirrors - of course none of the kids had the inclination or patience to read any of the actual science behind why the images curved a certain way, but still loved it. All in all, a great day out.

I cannot believe we have been in HK long enough for events to start becoming annual! Truly newbies no longer. Half term week meant another junk boat trip organized by my boat obsessed hubby. We spent a lovely day out on the water with 5 other families - we had 14 children and 10 adults on board and we miraculously made it through without even needing a bandaid. There was a water slide and giant floats that we were able to use in the middle of the ocean. Another year, another epic halloween spent in DB, where once again I was amazed by the level of enthusiasm for a festival once unknown outside of the US. Gone are the days of pretty princesses and cute pumpkins (why do kids grow up!). This year we had a scary vampire, wonder woman and spiderman. V has truly turned into a honky as he dedicatedly kept his spidey mask on for hours! With parents visiting soon we will hopefully have the chance to explore more - stay tuned!
